1. In the program matrix, click Import.
2. Navigate to the file that you want to import, and click Open.

   The file is loaded into REVerence. The channels from an interleaved file are imported in the same order as in other areas of the program (for example, the VST Connections window), see below.

3. Make the appropriate settings and add a picture, if available.

   Pictures residing in the same folder as the impulse response file or in the parent folder are automatically found and displayed.

4. Click the Store button to save the impulse response and its settings as a program. That way you can recall the setup at any time.

The program slot turns blue, indicating that a program is loaded.

As if that wasn’t enough, LePou has also created a impulse response loader, a separate VST for loading cabinet simulator impulses (an amp sim without a cab sim will sound like crap). LeCab2 can actually load 6 simultaneous impulses that you can mix to your liking (pan/filter/volume etc). The well known free convolution VST reverb. After we talked about virtual amp simulators in the past, the next logical step is to have a look at guitar cabinet impulse responses (in short: IR). Those so-called impulse responses are sound measurements that contain information about the guitar cabinet speaker, the room where everything is recorded as well as about the used microphone and microphone preamp in the particular situation.

When saving a program, the impulse response file itself is only referenced. It still resides in the same location as before and is not modified in any way.

Repeat these steps for any impulse response files that you want to work with.

Digital amp sims have come a long way in recent years, but with some styles of music, such as heavy metal, it can be hard to find the right tone. That’s where impulse responses come in handy.

It’s absolutely amazing how good of a sound you can get out of an amp sim with the right impulse. You can achieve the same tone from your favorite song or guitarist with little effort.

Most amp sims worth using allow you to import IR’s, or you can use a free program like LeCab 2 or NadIR. There are tens of thousands of impulse responses available online. Some cost money to buy, like Rosen Digital and RedWirez Impulses, but there are tons of free ones online that are really good if you know where to look.

What is an Impulse Response?

Impulse Responses are basically designed to capture the unique sounds of various cabinet and microphone combinations.

They also capture the frequency of the entire signal chain from the mic, the power amp, preamp, and even the specific sound of the room, among other things.

How to Use Impulse Responses

Most amp sims support importing Impulse Response files. I use Recabinet 4 and TSE X50. Those are both paid amp simulators, but offer free demos. Both are really good at simulating the Peavey 6505/5150.

Another free standalone IR loader is NadIR by Ignite Amps. It can load two IRs at once and the plugin includes other controls like panning, filters, stereo control, and delay.
